Next Steps
VS 101: Garment Creation
Learn the steps to create 3D garments from pattern shapes
In this course, you will learn about basic 3D garment creation – from importing DXF files through garment simulation.
To begin with, you’ll learn about the 2D resources and familiarize yourself with the context view logic. This will help you to identify pattern pieces, create symmetry, and then arrange and prepare pattern pieces. Then, we’ll show you how single and multi-stitch is used to construct the garment. This is followed by an overview of the simulation tools and how to use snapshots, and finally we’ll finish the garment with basic 3D styling.
The course includes two quizzes to check your knowledge.
After learning the basic tools, follow the workflows to create a t-shirt and a pair of pants. Test your knowledge by completing the garment creation activity and then check your work with the activity review video.
Audience: Users new to VStitcher
Prerequisites: We recommend to complete the below courses before starting this course:
Additional Learning Tools: Links to Help Center
Format: Video, Text, PDF lessons with downloadable files
For a detailed summary of lessons, see below.
Overview of Garment Creation |
101 Garment Creation Glossary |
A reference PDF of commonly used terms in this course. |
What is a 3D Garment? |
A one-page PDF illustrating what makes up a 3D garment. |
Garment creation Overview
A one-page PDF visual overview of garment creation steps. |
Starting the Process |
Import DXF |
In this video lesson, you will learn how to import a DXF file into VStitcher. DXF is the file type for a 2D pattern. |
Topics: AAMA, ASTM formats, RUL table, shape rotation, DXF units, size multiplier, import points optimization and view grading.
2D Resources & Context View Logic |
In this video lesson, you will gain an understanding of the 2D Resources tab and the Context View. The 2D Resources show what is available to use in the file. The context view changes based on what is selected.
Topics: Selecting piece name, lock piece, don’t use piece, piece, line, and point options display on selection. |
Shape symmetry |
In this video lesson, you will gain an understanding of the shape symmetry. You will also learn how to apply and remove symmetry from pattern pieces.
Topics: X and Y piece symmetry, inner symmetry, create edge symmetry, cancel symmetry. |
Arrange mode |
In this video lesson you will learn how to arrange pattern pieces for simulation. This mode is used to tell the software where each piece is placed around the body.
Topics: placing pieces in arrange mode, cluster options, undefined pieces, arrange in 3D, 2D gizmo for rotate piece, center piece in cluster. |
Prepare |
In this video lesson you will learn how to prepare pattern pieces for simulation. This mode is used to refine pattern position in 3D. |
Topics: best practices for positioning pieces in prepare, 3D gizmo, move, rotate, and scale cluster in 3D, reset 3D transformations, select single pattern in cluster. |
Knowledge Checkpoint |
Complete the quiz to test your knowledge of the topics you have learned so far in this course. |
Stitching |
Single stitch
In this video lesson, you will learn how to stitch pattern pieces for simulation and identify when to utilize single or multi stitching.
Topics: Identify the edges of the pattern, stitch in 2D, stitch in 3D, Single stitch tool, delete stitch. |
Multi stitch
In this video lesson, you will learn how to stitch pattern pieces for simulation using multi stitch.
Topics: Multi-stitch tool, delete stitch. |
Version Update: Stitching |
In this text lesson, updates to the stitching tool will be shown. |
Topics: 3D Stitch Pins |

Simulation Tools & Snapshots |
In this video lesson, you will gain an understanding of simulation. This step is crucial to having a 3D garment. |
Topics: Dress, finish, undress, Update 3D, load snapshot, automatic snapshot, save manual snapshot. |
Basic 3D styling |
In this video lesson, you will learn how to style a garment for simulation. |
Topics: pinch, brush, move, radius, regular effect, focused effect, select full piece, hold, flatten, retouch, clear styling. |
Knowledge Checkpoint |
Complete the quiz to test your knowledge of the topics you have learned so far in this course. |
